Which Type of Massage Is Right for Me?

Almost 20% of US women and men received at least one type of therapeutic massage in 2018, according to the American Massage Therapists Association’s 2019 Massage Profession Research Report. Reasons vary from needing relief from a medical condition to just wanting to feel pampered and relaxed.

Our massage experts at Biz MedSpa in Fremont, California, are here to help you find the perfect type of massage. Under the guidance of our founder, Donald Lee, DO, we offer a variety of massage techniques. All of our massages help:

However, each “flavor” of massage also offers unique benefits that line up with a variety of symptoms and needs. Following are a few questions that can help you find the very best massage for you, right now.

Do you want to indulge your senses?

Aromatherapy massage relaxes your body and also soothes your nervous system with a combination of therapeutic touch and healing essential oils. Essential oils are extracted from the leaves, petals, and barks of various flowers, plants, and trees.

We only use pure essential oils that contain nothing but the essence of the plant cells that are rich with fragrance. Your massage therapist chooses an essential oil based on your needs. Some examples are:

The oils penetrate your skin as your therapist gently kneads your muscles and fascia with a gentle Swedish massage or an intense deep-tissue massage, such as Shiatsu. But the oils also stimulate receptors in your nose that signal your brain to release endorphins including oxytocin (aka, the cuddle hormone).

Does your back need a buffing?

Even if you regularly exfoliate your face, you may be neglecting other areas, including your back. A salt scrub massage combines aromatic oils with sea salt. The coarse salt scrubs off the top layer of your dead skin cells, allowing the soothing oils to penetrate deeply into your skin.

Your therapist first applies the aromatic salt scrub to your back, massaging it in, getting rid of dead cells that makes your skin look dull. The oils then penetrate your skin and trigger relaxation through their scent as well.

Once the salt scrub is over, you take a brief shower. Your therapist finishes the session by massaging your entire body with oil for overall relaxation and well-being.

Are your muscles stiff or painful?

Shiatsu massage is a Japanese form of deep-tissue massage that stimulates circulation, breaks up stress blockages, and stimulates the flow of energy throughout your entire body. Many athletes rely on Shiatsu massage as well as other massage techniques to help them recover from the intensity and injuries of a sports game.

Your massage therapist presses on different points throughout your body, using their fingers, thumbs, and the palms of their hands. Because the aim of Shiatsu is to break up blockages and stimulate circulation, it’s more intense than other forms of massage. Sometimes, if you’re very tense in an area, it can even feel momentarily painful.

However, the end result of Shiatsu is that your blood and lymph flow more freely through your body. Blood brings nourishment to your tissues and lymph whisks away toxins. Conditions that respond well to Shiatsu include sinus problems and chronic pain.

Do you want to just “let go?”

Either as a standalone therapy, or as an add-on to another technique, hot-stone therapy soothes your back with smooth, heated stones. You lie on your stomach while your massage therapist places the stones on specific points along your back and spine to unleash stored energy and promote relaxation. Hot-stone therapy is a great way to “top” off a day at BizMed Spa.

Do you need relief?

If you’ve ever given yourself a foot massage after a long, hard day, you know how relaxing it can be. But reflexology takes foot massage to the next level.

Your reflexologist refers to a “foot map” to find the exact points on your foot that correspond to the issue, condition, or pain that troubles you. Each organ of your body is represented by a point on your foot. Your reflexologist massages and presses those points to give you the relief you seek.

Perhaps you know which type of massage you want, or maybe they all sound so good you still don’t know how to choose. Either way, we can help. Give us a call at 510-270-0422 or use our easy online form to book a massage today.
