If you’re considering dermal fillers to enhance your natural beauty, you’re not alone. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 2.6 million people in the United States received soft filler injections in 2018.
It’s one thing to decide that you’re going to get dermal fillers, but you may struggle to determine which type of filler, Juvéderm® or Radiesse®, is right for you. Our aesthetic specialist, Dr. Donald Lee at Biz MedSpa, offers both types of fillers and has specific uses for each.
Many things in your body change as you get older, including the structure of your skin. You may not be a fan of the fat on your thighs or hips, but the subcutaneous fat under your skin is responsible for your smooth, taut, and youthful look. Unfortunately, your subcutaneous fat diminishes with each passing year, resulting in sagging, lines, and creases.
But it’s not just the fat under your skin that changes. Collagen production also decreases as you get older. This essential protein provides your skin with its youthful strength and elasticity. Like the lost fat, a decline in collagen contributes to the development of lines and wrinkles.
Dermal fillers act as a replacement for the lost fat and restore your lost volume to smooth out lines and creases, as well as enhance your natural features. The injections may also stimulate collagen production. In addition to lines and wrinkles, we also use dermal fillers to plump up your lips and diminish the appearance of recessed acne scars.
At Biz MedSpa, Dr. Lee uses the Juvéderm and Radiesse brands of dermal fillers and has very specific reasons and uses for each.
Radiesse contains calcium hydroxyapatite, which is a mineral found in your teeth and bones. When suspended in water, the calcium hydroxyapatite creates a gel-like substance. In addition to adding volume under your skin, the calcium hydroxyapatite also stimulates the production of collagen, which helps prolong the effects of your cosmetic injection.
For those deep creases along your cheeks, nose, and jawline, Dr. Lee prefers using Radiesse fillers. He also uses the collagen-stimulating fillers to add volume and lift to the bridge of your nose, as well as during an eyebrow lift to give you a more youthful look.
Radiesse is also FDA-approved for use on your hands in addition to your face.
To add volume under your skin, the Juvéderm collection uses a gel-like substance naturally found in your body called hyaluronic acid. The Juvéderm fillers also contain lidocaine, which decreases your discomfort during the injection.
Dr. Lee specifically uses the Juvéderm collection of fillers to fill in the deepest creases, including your smile and frown lines. He also prefers Juvéderm injections for adding volume to your lips.
With Juvéderm, Dr. Lee is able to provide smooth and consistent results that may last a few months or more than a year, depending on the type of Juvéderm filler used. The injections may also stimulate collagen production, but the Juvéderm line of fillers isn’t specifically designed for this purpose as Radiesse is.
When it comes to deciding which filler is best for you, it really depends on your overall beauty goals and personal skin needs. With his knowledge and skillset, Dr. Lee can create a plan using the filler that helps you get the look you want, without looking overdone.
